On Tuesday night, Colin Kaepernick received two honors. The first was the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards’ Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, and the second was the fact that Beyoncé presented him with it. At the annual awards ceremony, Sports Illustrated honored Kaepernick for his activism during the 2016-17 N.F.L. season, when he refused to stand for the national anthem to protest police brutality.

“Thank you Colin Kaepernick. Thank you for your selfless heart, and your conviction. Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion only hope to change the world for the better,” Beyoncé said. “To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color. We’re still waiting for the world to catch up.”

The former 49ers quarterback, who opted out of his contract with the team earlier this year and hasn’t been picked up by another, then took the stage and spoke about the reasons for his protest, which has inspired dozens of other athletes and attracted the ire of the president.

“I say this as a person who receives credit for using my platform to protest systemic oppression, racialized injustice, and the dire consequences of anti-blackness in America. I accept this award not for myself, but on behalf of the people. Because if it were not for my love of the people, I would not have protested. And if it was not for the support from the people, I would not be on this stage today. With or without the N.F.L.’s platform, I will continue to work for the people because my platform is the people.”

Beyoncé herself dealt with her fair share of backlash in 2016, when she paid tribute to the Black Panthers and the Black Lives Matter movement in her Super Bowl performance of “Formation.” “I wanted people to feel proud and have love for themselves,” Beyoncé told Entertainment Weekly at the time.
