Man killed while delivering food in Catonsville, police say

A 42-year-old food delivery driver was killed in Catonsville, Baltimore County police said.

Police were called around 8 p.m. Monday about an unconscious person in the 900 block of Vanderwood Road in the Westview Park area. Officers found 42-year-old Idrissa Derme, of Baltimore City, dead of at least one gunshot wound, police said.

Police said Derme was delivering food when he was shot and killed, but are unsure of the time he was shot. Police said no one in the area reported hearing gunshots.

“This is a quiet neighborhood. I’ve been here since 1957. This is unreal. This is not the way its supposed to be,” said Charles Scheafer.

Robbery is being investigated as a motive in his death.

“At this point, this is a classic whodunit. We have no information to follow up on, as far as these suspects go,” said Officer Jennifer Peach, of the Baltimore County Police Department.

Friends of Derme are coming to terms with the news of his death.

“I was really shocked. I mean, I couldn’t sleep after that,” said Tony Ayyaz.

Ayaz worked with Derme at the Pizza Boli’s in west Baltimore up until two weeks ago. He left to work as a delivery driver for a food app. He said he doesn’t understand why someone took the life of a hardworking, quiet man.

“You want to take his stuff, take his stuff. You want to rob him, rob him. I know you’re doing something wrong, but to take somebody’s life, that’s completely wrong,” Ayyaz said.

Neighbors are stunned this happened outside their front doors and said it is disturbing to know the suspect or suspects are on the loose.

“I’m going to go buy myself some protection. It’s coming to that,” Schaefer said.

Anyone who may have seen or heard the incident is being asked to call police.
